On what was once the site of a small gym and asphalt parking lot, there will soon be a place where families can find safe, affordable housing and proximity to all that Cambridge has to offer. Callahan Construction is overseeing the construction of 52 New Street, which will yield 106 units in a brand new six-story structure consisting of 22 one-bedrooms, 62 two-bedrooms, and 22 three-bedrooms units when complete on behalf of its client Just A Start.

Just A Start, a longstanding community development corporation, is committed to providing and preserving affordable housing, offering education and training for youth and adults, and building community engagement. The organization has maintained a steady focus on providing much-needed affordable housing opportunities in a tight and increasingly expensive rental market.

Callahan has deep experience in both the residential and affordable housing sectors, with a knack for building high-quality spaces with sustainable features all within the confines of strict budget parameters. The company also is a regular fixture on the Boston and Cambridge landscape, oftentimes working in confined spaces where maintaining pedestrian access and respecting abutters is essential to project success.

52 New Street is located on a tight, one-acre parcel in a rapidly evolving neighborhood, where many industrial sites are giving way to new residential projects. When the Just A Start project is finished, residents of Cambridge will have access to a variety of options for varying income levels, including:
 

• Seventeen (17) units in the project will be restricted to households at incomes of 30% AMI or below;
• Ten (10) units will be designated as workforce units, restricted to households earning 80% AMI or below;
• The remaining 79 units will be restricted to households earning up to 60% AMI.

In addition to working with Just A Start to deliver maximum value against the budget requirements, Callahan will ultimately deliver a residential facility that complies with Passive House International standards, in turn creating an ultra-low energy project that aligns with both city and state goals of reducing energy consumption.
