Callahan has received Safety Training Evaluation Process’ (STEP) Safety Gold Award from Associated Builders and Contractors of Massachusetts (ABC). The award honors Callahan for its outstanding safety precautions on job sites. This marks the 12th consecutive year Callahan has received the Gold Award.
“A contractor’s most valuable resource is their workers. There is nothing more important than jobsite safety,” said GCI President Julie Kelliher. “This year’s STEP award recipients deserve each and every accolade they received by continuing to raise the standards of safety, training, and education throughout the construction industry.”
According to STEP, a GOLD award “demonstrates a unilateral dedication and commitment to job site safety, practiced by employees.” STEP is a safety benchmarking and improvement tool, STEP has evolved into a world-class safety management system that dramatically improves safety performance among participants regardless of company size or type of work. Established in 1969, STEP was developed and written by contractors, for contractors.
“Safety is always our first priority on Callahan construction sites, so to receive the STEP Gold Award again is an honor, and testament to our commitment to training across all our job sites,” said Tim Leblanc, Director of Safety at Callahan. “From routine training seminars to weekly safety inspections, we strive to ensure that each Callahan project provides a safe work environment for employees.”
To receive the Gold Award, Callahan had to adhere to the STEP practices for updating and maintaining a culture of safety. For nomination, Callahan documented incident rates and supplied scores for each of the 20 key components of the STEP requirements on a weighted point scale. Callahan also had to demonstrate success in educating site employees on proper safety precaution. In receiving a Gold Award, Callahan had to “equip employees with the materials necessary to guarantee safety for all” as per STEP guidelines.
“Safety is our number one priority as an organization, and we are proud to one again receive a STEP award,” said Pat Callahan, President of Callahan Construction Managers. “I appreciate seeing our Callahan team executing our extensive safety training in the field.”
STEP Awards are presented annually to ABC member companies with exceptional safety records and this year’s applicant pool was very competitive, with 60 companies recognized for their outstanding commitment to jobsite safety. Applicants are evaluated on a number of statistical factors such as incident rates, lost time and OSHA recordables. Tim Leblanc accepted the award on behalf of Callahan at the 15th Annual Safety & Education Dinner, held on May 16th at the Burlington Marriott in Burlington, MA.
