The South Shore YMCA (SSYMCA) recently held its Grand Opening ceremony for its new Quincy facility. Members of the Callahan, Inc. team joined Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch, South Shore YMCA leaders, staff, project donors and members of the public to celebrate the opening of the state-of-the-art facility.
Callahan, Inc., provided construction management and site development services for the new facility.
The $30 million facility officially opened its doors to members in December 2013. The two-story, 118,000 square foot branch now includes a two pool aquatics center, multipurpose gymnasium with multiple courts, health and well-being center, early learning center, a full-day childcare center, classrooms and meeting rooms, outdoor playground, field house, turf field, running track, and administrative and support spaces.
The facility includes a number of sustainable and green, design initiatives. “We’ve incorporated the use of porous pavement, energy-reducing LED site-lighting and a waste recycling program into the site design,” said Patrick Callahan, President, Callahan, Inc.
The finalized branch includes expanded parking areas and a vehicular drop-off area adjacent to the main building entrance. It also features pedestrian sidewalks, crosswalks and handicap accessible ramps. Significant site and perimeter landscaping were also completed as part of the overall redesign.
Callahan, Inc. is still on site completing abatement and demo work on the original remaining structure.
