Callahan partnered with The Kensington Investment Co. for this ground-up, 14,000 SF building. The building serves as a meeting
space for leadership training seminars and retreats, primarily for those who work within the non-profit sector. The building is a
unique blend of construction types, with a concrete and steel foundation and lower-level floor plate, with the 2 levels above
constructed of reclaimed timbers. Built into a previously undeveloped section of woods on the property, the building is set within
a steep hill several hundred yards away from the parking area that serves it.
The building is the first of its kind in New England, in that it was designed to achieve Passive House Standards. Passive House (or
Passivhaus) is a standard originally developed in Germany in 1988. It combines unparalleled comfort with very low energy
consumption, by integrating quality design and craftsmanship with superior windows, extremely high levels of insulation and
heat recovery ventilation.
