On Friday, May 3rd, Callahan Construction Managers (Callahan) participated in a quarterly volunteer day at Rosie’s Place in Boston. 15 Callahan employees prepared and served meals to 90 women and children.

Founded in 1974, Rosie’s Place was the first women’s shelter in the United States. The organization provides meals, shelter and wide-ranging support from housing to education services. Rosie’s Place looks to maintain the dignity of women in the Boston area by providing a safe, nurturing environment that helps women find security and seek opportunity in their lives.

Rosie’s Place is one of the many organizations where Callahan volunteers both time and resources as part of their Constructing Communities program. Constructing Communities was designed to support the local communities where Callahan works, offering outreach through volunteerism, the hiring of local subcontractors and the purchase of local goods. Callahan’s corporate responsibility efforts are one of the reasons the company was named a “Top Work Place” by the Boston Globe in 2018. Callahan also supports the South Shore Habitat for Humanity with numerous build-days throughout the year.

“I always appreciate our days at Rosie’s Place, and the opportunity provided by Callahan to spend our time volunteering,” stated Brian Dolan, Assistant Project Manager at Callahan. “It’s one of the many ways we can give back to local communities where we work and live.”

Callahan Construction Managers (Callahan) announces that Joe Horrigan has joined the firm as Project Executive. Horrigan’s addition supports Callahan’s growth throughout the New England region.

Horrigan joins Callahan after 15+ years at AvalonBay Communities, Inc., where he served in various project management capacities. Most recently, he served as Director of Construction at Avalon’s North Station, Sudbury, Norwood and Saugus properties. Horrigan oversaw more than 3,100 apartment homes in various garden, mid-rise and high-rise developments, and has overseen parking garage, waste water treatment facilities, mixed-use retail, and transit-oriented developments. He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Villanova University.

“My professional experience is almost exclusively in multi-family residential development, so Callahan was an easy choice for me to start the next chapter of my career,” stated Horrigan. “Joining Callahan provides me the opportunity to bring my expertise to a new team that already has a large footprint in the multi-family market but also offers the opportunity for involvement in projects in a variety of other sectors as well.”

As Project Executive, Horrigan will oversee and maintain the quality and integrity of the construction management process for various projects, from the identification of an opportunity through closeout. He will be responsible for entire project teams, tasked with resolving major construction related issues while also communicating with project team members about issues and procedures. Horrigan will ensure strong communication with the clients, determining the project’s overall objectives while directing the means and methods needed to bring the project in on time, within budget and to client satisfaction.

“With Joe’s extensive experience in multi-family residential development and our past experiences working directly with him on the client’s side of the table, we knew that he would be a great addition to the Callahan team,” stated Pat Callahan, President at Callahan Construction Managers. “We know that Joe will be an asset in helping us effectively manage our continued growth.”

Callahan Construction Managers (Callahan), a full-service construction management company that has served the New England and Northeast regions for more than 65 years, is partnering with South Shore Habitat for Humanity (SSHH) in its effort to provide safe, healthy and affordable housing to families in need on the South Shore of Massachusetts.

As a “SSHH Community Builder,” Callahan’s contribution directly supports the organization’s mission to “build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter”. The community builder program is a yearlong partnership designed to foster collaboration, communication and civic engagement through employee volunteerism.

“We are proud to partner with South Shore Habitat for Humanity to build affordable housing for families in need,” said Patrick Callahan, President of Callahan Construction Managers. “We’ve been volunteering for years with the organization and most recently had a group onsite during Women in Construction week. Our employees appreciate the opportunity to work side-by-side with families and help them realize their dream of home ownership. It is rewarding to know that we can utilize our skills to help improve people’s lives for the better.”

Callahan Construction Managers (Callahan) announces its partnership with Jefferson Apartment Group (JAG) and the City of Malden as the exclusive construction partner for the new J Malden Center. Designed by CBT, the project is a reimagination the current downtown, connecting residences with the MBTA station, shops and restaurants. Overall, 550,000 square feet of redevelopment will occur.

Once complete, J Malden Center will be a mixed-use project consisting of retail space, 300+ residential apartments, and the creation of an expansive civic office condominium that will become the future home of Malden’s City Hall, strategically positioned at the Gateway to Malden Center. The design focuses on reconnecting a major pedestrian street link to the central hub of the city.

“Callahan is proud to be a part of downtown Malden’s revitalization” said Patrick Callahan, President of Callahan Construction. “We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with JAG and CBT to create a desirable urban living experience with community amenities and local hotspots for shopping and dining.”

Callahan has updated the exterior façade for each building involved and is currently overseeing the interior build-out. Callahan was tasked to construct 546,881 square feet of space, with the new building designed to mirror the height and character of neighboring properties while also adding a new vibrancy to the city center.

Wakefield, MA – Callahan Construction Managers announced the completion of interior renovations at Harvard Mills in Wakefield.

The project involved a reimagination of the common areas in the west wing of the historic woolen mill, originally built in the early 1900s.

Developer Taurus Investment Holdings, LLC has owned the building since 1999 and hired Callahan to execute a renovation of the common areas, intending to feature the four-story atrium, exposed brick, and high ceilings throughout the building. The project consisted of modernizing the common areas, bathrooms, and exterior landscaping and design. Cube 3 served as the architect for the renovation.

Harvard Mills now offers tenants updated common areas and restrooms and a spacious lobby. The brick-and-beam history of the building provides an alternative workspace, different from many other office spaces in Wakefield. The unique design intends to attract creative, collaborative, and technology-based tenants to the building.

“We always appreciate the opportunity to bring new life to historic properties” stated Patrick Callahan, president of Callahan Inc. “As a local, family run business, we like to ensure that the spaces we create both reflect and maintain the traditions of the cities and towns where we build.”

“The Harvard Mills building has been a landmark for the Town of Wakefield for over a century, and Taurus wanted to preserve this history,” stated Peter Merrigan, CEO & Partner of Taurus. “Taurus and Callahan have a successful track record of restoring unique properties, so we knew they would be the right fit for the project.”

Harvard Mills is located two blocks from the Commuter Rail in downtown Wakefield, with a 20-minute commute to Boston’s North Station. Tenants at Harvard Mills include Persimmon Technologies Corporation, Riverside Wealth Management and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.

Callahan recently completed Post @ 200 Smith Street, a renovation and expansion of an office and industrial building into a 395,000 square-foot first class creative office complex. The project is owned by Anchor Line Partners and designed by CBT Architects.

The completion was celebrated on May 1st with a Derby Day Celebration! The event included a craft food bar, performers on stilts, a jockey handing out long stem roses and a “race” where the winner won a trip to the Kentucky Derby!

Callahan is continuing participation in its Constructing Communities initiative with Quincy High School following its launch of the latest installment last year. The partnership aims to inspire the next generation of engineers, architects and builders by providing invaluable real world experience.

This year, Callahan provided lessons to HVAC students on cooling and heating processes on-site at Elevation Apartments at Crown Colony, a multifamily project in Quincy, that Callahan is building for the John Flatley Company. The students were taught directly by the on-site foreman from Macormack Plumbing and Heating. The program included three site visits for students at Crown Colony with the opportunity for some of the students to participate in a summer co-op with Callahan.

On May 7th, Callahan participated, for the second year in a row, in the 11th Annual National Women Who Build Week with South Shore Habitat for Humanity and Lowes in honor of National Women Build Week. The Callahan team spent the day helping to build decent and affordable housing to help families achieve stability. This year the home was located in Duxbury, MA and was ready for a deserving family to move in on June 24th!
