Callahan has won a Gold Level Safety, Training, and Evaluation Process (S.T.E.P) Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Massachusetts, the state’s largest commercial construction association, and the Gould Construction Institute (GCI), ABC’s training affiliate, for the 11th consecutive year. The award was presented at the 14th Annual ABC/GCI Safety & Education Dinner on May 17th at the Burlington Marriott in Burlington, MA.

S.T.E.P. is a national ABC program that provides safety benchmarking and improvement tools that have been shown to dramatically improve safety performance among participating companies.  Established in 1969, S.T.E.P. was developed and written by contractors, for contractors. Companies measure their safety performance and policies through a review of 20 key components with a goal of enhancing safety programs and reducing job-site incident rates.

S.T.E.P. Awards are presented annually to ABC member companies with exceptional safety records and this year’s applicant pool was very competitive, with 58 companies recognized for their outstanding commitment to job-site safety. Applicants are evaluated on a number of statistical factors such as incident rates, lost time and OSHA recordables. The S.T.E.P. Awards banquet is ABC/GCI’s premier annual event.

Bridgewater, MA  – Callahan Construction Managers (Callahan), a Bridgewater-based construction management firm, has been named the winner of a National Safety Excellence Merit Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). Callahan received the award March 1 during the 27th annual Excellence in Construction® Awards at Workforce Week ’17 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

“Associated Builders and Contractors is thrilled to honor Callahan, whose world-class safety processes and safety culture has created an environment where every employee understands that the wellbeing of those around them is everyone’s responsibility,” said 2017 ABC National Chair Chuck Goodrich, president of Gaylor Electric Inc., Indianapolis. “Callahan’s impressive safety record shows the clear difference that an uncompromising, top-down commitment to safety makes in a contractor’s performance and we are proud to call them an ABC member.”

The 2016 National Safety Excellence Award winners were selected from ABC member firms that achieved Diamond, Platinum and Gold status in ABC’s Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP). During the selection process, national safety winners were judged on self-evaluation scores, lost workday case rates, total recordable incident rates, leading indicator use, process and program innovations and video interviews conducted by members of ABC’s National Environment, Health and Safety Committee.

STEP is the standard for developing world-class safety programs in construction and is designed to help both large and small contractors evaluate every aspect of their corporate safety and health program and identify opportunities for improvement. In February 2017, ABC published its annual Safety Performance Report, which documented that the average STEP Diamond company is 770 percent safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ average for the entire industry based on their total recordable incident rate.

“It is truly an honor to receive national recognition from the Associated Builders and Contractors for our active commitment to uncompromising safety standards throughout all of the projects we manage,” said Patrick Callahan, President of Callahan Construction Managers. “Ensuring a safe and healthy work environment is a priority for Callahan, and it’s gratifying to be recognized among leaders in the industry.”

The National Safety Awards are presented in three major North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code categories: NAICS 236 – Construction of Buildings; NAICS 237 – Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction; and NAICS 238 – Specialty Trade Contractors.
