By Will Gregg, CPHB – QA/QC Manager
Sustaining a high level of quality on construction projects requires more than processes, procedures, and checklists. It demands a quality-focused culture that is valued throughout the organization. Cultural growth demands clear expectations, consistent messaging, and aligned principles. Callahan’s core values of Teamwork, Perseverance, Integrity, and Continuous Improvement represent these guiding standards which direct, engage, and support quality initiatives, an investment in resources, and a focus on learning and development. Callahan has built a dedicated Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) team that works alongside our field operations to collaborate on processes, improve execution, and evolve the culture of quality excellence we’ve built across our Northeast operations for over 70 years.
Perfection isn’t always possible, however with strong relationships between the field teams and office operations, building an effective culture of quality, we aspire to an exceptional level of construction quality.
Our QA/QC team does a lot more than just observe and report. Regular visits to job sites allow our quality professionals to work directly with colleagues and trade partners to identify opportunities for continuous improvement. This approach allows Callahan to not only monitor quality and execution, but also uncover more nuanced issues that can materialize, such as the communication effectiveness between the project management team, trades, and all the project stakeholders. While this may seem like a small hurdle, miscommunication can become a big challenge if intent and alignment of expectations break down.
Our quality team brings institutional knowledge to projects that can improve outcomes in real time. They may recognize a similar challenge on a project just getting out of the ground that another team navigated successfully on a job completed last year. It’s a simple connection but a meaningful one; that brings tangible benefits from hard won lessons learned and is only possible when our quality team has boots on the ground and active participation across all projects. While digitized data archives are accessible via our internal technology platforms, it doesn’t change the fact that much of this business is done on-site, in person. Relationships truly matter and are reinforced by a quality culture with a strong unity of purpose and knowledge sharing within our own teams.
By combining a lesson learned methodology with construction software like Procore and SharePoint, our QA/QC discipline is helping us to build a lesson learned platform that will be accessible across every Callahan jobsite whether near our home office in Bridgewater, MA or at project sites from Portland, Maine to Queens, New York. Meaningful documentation is essential in construction, and Callahan is investing in what we learn every day and making it available as a resource for our teams.
Issues will still come up, even within a robust quality-driven culture. Strong relationships within our teams, with our trade partners and clients, and with a deep bench of resources, allow Callahan to analyze, communicate, and act on information that leads toward successful outcomes with minimal impact on schedule and cost.
Callahan does not forget that people build buildings, and their engagement with Callahan’s culture of quality is one of the most impactful factors in delivering an exceptional experience and outstanding project outcomes for our clients.
