Callahan, Inc. was recently honored with an Excellence in Construction (EICA) Green Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC). The award, presented each year to construction projects that maintain the highest performance standards, recognized Callahan’s Falmouth Ice Arena project for its environmentally “Green” techniques and sustainable design.

The award, presented at Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy, MA, was decided upon by an expert panel of diverse judges who based their decision on quality, complexity, and effective utilization of resources, amongst other criteria.

“It was important to the owner to be environmentally friendly” said Patrick Callahan, President of Callahan, Inc.” The entire roof and two-thirds of the parking lot are covered with over 3,000 solar panels. “The arena is also a net zero building that relies on exceptional energy conservation and on-site renewables to meet all of its heating, cooling and electricity requirements. The solar takes care of 100 percent of the energy needs of the building and the arena is the only one of its kind in the region and uses half the power of similar arenas

After witnessing more than a quarter century of growth at Callahan Inc, Chief Estimator Ian Carpenter is ready to take his retirement. A recipient of the Callahan Estimating Hall of Fame Award, Carpenter was honored by his colleagues at a recent event.

Over the years, Ian has been a key resource for Callahan’s clients during the due diligence and preconstruction phases of projects. He contributed his knowledge and experience to many important projects like North Andover High School and Brown School Residences.

“His efforts have helped mold Callahan’s reputation as a firm that develops reliable estimates for owners,” said company president Patrick Callahan. “Ian has been known at Callahan as a patient hard-worker who was always willing to help people, whether it was with estimating or anything else.”

For nearly 20 years, Ian worked as a mentor to Frank DiCenso, Senior Estimator. DiCenso recently explained that Ian doesn’t plan to sit idly at home and relax during his retirement.

“He’s looking forward to doing some work on his houses and spending time volunteering at the local animal shelter,” said DiCenso. “He takes in as many as four dogs and a couple of cats at any given time at his home.”

Callahan extends its best wishes to Ian on this new chapter in his life. After 26 years at the firm, his retirement is well deserved.

Callahan Construction was recently presented with a Gold Level Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) award by The National Associated Builders & Contractors at the Gould Construction Institute’s Safety and Education event for the seventh consecutive year. The Gold Level status demonstrates Callahan’s dedication to job site safety, as practiced by its employees and subcontractors.

“Being honored with the STEP award means a lot to us,” said Steve O’Reilly, Safety Director at Callahan Construction. “As a company we strive to improve the quality and conditions for our workers and are committed to maintaining a secure and protected work area on each and every project we build.”

The National Associated Builders & Contractors established STEP, a safety improvement tool, in 1989. To be presented with the STEP award, a company must prove its excellence in workplace safety and provide its employees with evaluation tools that guarantee their protection.

“To be nominated for the award, we had to provide all manner of documentation about our safety program,” said O’Reilly. “We also had to describe our day to day safety protocol and take part in a lengthy key component evaluation.”

Though the application process was extensive, it was well worth it. “We are proud of maintaining such safe work sites for our employees,” added O’Reilly. “We urge other companies to do the same.”

Callahan Inc. was recently named one of the Top 400 Contractors by Engineering News-Record.

Callahan, Inc., a full service construction firm which specializes in preconstruction and construction management services, was recently honored by Preservation Massachusetts for its excellence in construction planning on historic sites. The award was presented at the 27th annual Paul E. Tsongas Awards at The Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston on May 7th.

The Tsongas Awards are held each May by Preservation Massachusetts, a statewide non-profit historic preservation organization dedicated to preserving the Commonwealth’s heritage.
